The Price for a Good Time
Ever been to the circus? Eating cotton candy, getting sick on carnival rides…running from clowns. They are not to be trifled with. And then we head to the Big Top where we’re fascinated by the lights, color and magic tricks that wait for us. But behind the curtains and costumes, we see things far more shocking than the ringmaster would care to announce. Sure, we can just look the other way, and say “Oh it’s all in good fun to watch the animals do a few harmless tricks, we teach are dogs to do them.” I mean, Ringling Brothers, America’s most infamous traveling animal circus, advertises that all of the tricks the animals are taught to perform are inspired by what they do naturally in their play time. Yeah, I watch animal planet, and let me tell you I’m getting a little bored watching bears ride bicycles through the woods, and nothing puts me to sleep quicker than watching elephants stack themselves on each other over and over again in the wide open spaces of Mongolia. We know these things happen. We know Taco Bell has butchered more than a few labor laws in their time. But the minute we see they’ve got a new super quesadilla in stores, or that the circus is in town, we rush in the first chance we get. Why? Why are we willing to pay any price for a good time?
You might say it’s because we have no self control. I mean, some of us, are more tempted than others, let’s face it, to glance at the tabloids at the grocery store, keeping our eyes open in case a certain blond country princess is ever going to get back together with a certain tan strapping young werewolf. But in any case, those snap shots reveling the personal lives of our favorite celebrities, are taken by the parasites of the paparazzi that we have been constantly reminded are a huge reason why they fall victim to drugs, alcohol, shave their heads. One of the greatest philosophes of the 18th century, Voltaire, once said “Common sense, is not so common.” How true that is. People buy these magazines, and fuel the paparazzi further to get more of those front page headlines, because all consumers really care about is the final product, not the way it was created. Out of sight, out of mind.
Although it would be nicer to compare the whole situation to that of exploiting celebrities through tabloids, these animal circuses can be more closely related to far more barbaric practices. Dog fights, the Roman gladiator games, and cock fights, can all be associated under the same category. All were and or are events where animals and individuals were forced to undergo some form of violence, pain, and even death, for the sake of entertaining others, and almost always for a profit. How is attending animal circus’s any different? It’s simple. Rather than beating the elephants with bull hooks and putting them in chains in front of the audience, they do that before and after show time, while the show introduces each animal as if they live to perform, when really, they perform to live. Out of sight, out of mind.
Every ticket, every magazine, every product you purchase is a vote toward what they’re selling. You pay because you like what you see and you want to see more. We need to open our eyes, realize just what it is we are supporting, research it and find the facts. The next time we see a hot pair of running shoes, and see that big old check mark slashed across the side, we need to take a moment to consider what exactly went into making this product, who it affects, what you’re really paying for. Because sweatshop workers can be hidden behind that check mark logo, just like how circus animals are hidden behind their head pieces that read “The Greatest Show on Earth.” And maybe one day those circus workers will realize that their animal abuse gimmick isn’t too profitable, and it will die out and become a subject we only read about in our history books. But it all starts with knowing what you’re buying, and after that it’s just the matter of convincing yourself to hold back the next time the new super quesadilla comes out. Maybe we can do the same with the clown situation. How much are you willing to pay for a good time?

A clown costume for my med size 40lb dog? I really would just like the ruffly thing for her neck. She does shows for nursing homes and schools. She jumps through hoops so I don’t think a clown hat would be practical.

Where should I begin?
Let’s see…I guess it all started around the time I turned 16. To put it simply, that summer, I lost my dear childhood friend because of a lack of communication, and I spiraled into a depression that resulted in a break-up with my girlfriend and the loss of a bunch of my other friends.

In a desperate attempt to divert my thoughts from suicide, I began watching movies. I stumbled across an animated Disney movie called ‘Bolt’ that I had written off a few months ago since it seemed to be aimed at a younger crowd. After watching the movie, a spark ignited within in me. A spark that I knew so well as a child, but had nearly been extinguished under an intense wave of depression. It was like I was re-living my childhood again. The movie gave me a new hope, and a new outlook. And a new fetish.

The movie became my primary source of comfort for months. I purchased it from iTunes, and I would watch it almost every night on my tiny iPod screen. I came to admire the main protagonist, Bolt. He was like a friend to me during that dark, dark time in my life. Eventually, Bolt became more than a friend. He became the intangible, un-reachable object of my desire.

Shortly after I began developing "feelings" for this cartoon dog, I began surfing the Internet for anthro art, and I discovered a community of people who called themselves "Furries". These people shared my love for canines, and they flaunted it by dressing up in animal costumes and drawing pictures of animal/human hybrids making out or having intercourse. Even though I was initially disgusted and shocked at this strange culture, my depressed, wayward mind found something appealing and comforting about it.

When school started up again, I was still very depressed. My friends tried to cheer me up, but my deep depression could not be mended with a few kind words or a smile. My parents noticed my dropping grades and my gloomy demeanor, so they sent me to see the school counselor, and a therapist. After seeing these people, I was prescribed some anti-depressants, and I started to get my life back on track. I started to make friends again, my grades got better, and I started volunteering for school activities like plays and community service. But…something was terribly wrong.

I still liked dogs…a lot. I began to avoid my family dogs because I would get aroused when I looked at them. I tried to get more involved in school activities and make even more friends, but despite my best efforts, I couldn’t avoid those terrible thoughts! I still can’t avoid them…

My family is starting to notice my strange behavior. They notice that I avoid my sister’s room (which is decorated with wolf wallpaper), and they notice that I look away or walk out of the room when a dog comes on the tv.

I have NO IDEA what to do. I’m getting really worried, because I’m 18 years old, and I’m starting to not be "turned on" by beautiful women anymore. It’s like the attraction-switch has flipped in my mind, to an entirely different species. I need help. Has ANYONE out there ever been in a similar situation, or known someone who went through something like this?

Would the American public pay money to watch public executions?

I am very sure that if people could see criminals executed on TV or in public, the crowds would be very large and folks would even pay to see someone get the dirt nap before their eyes. Despite our technological advancements, I think perhaps that even the most educated and sophisticated among us would resort to their base level behavior of getting a rush from seeing someone die. How do I know this? The Spiderman musical ticket sales soared when the actors and the stunt doubles began to be injured on and above the stage. Also, look at all the money that folks paid to see Evel Knievel risk his neck doing stunts. They weren’t paying just to see the show and bright red white and blue costumes. They wanted to see Evel Knievel buy it in a bad accident.

I believe that if Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus advertised "Come see a human sacrifice", the ticket sales would double, if not triple. They would make massive money if the circus could legally make a deal with death row inmates to agree to be executed in a circus ring instead of in the lethal injectiom room (or gas chamber. And that if the death row inmates would agree for maybe a ,000 payment to their families, to let themselves recieve their death penalties before the audience, and bill it as "the human sacrifice", then the ticket sales would explode. It would be a win-win situation. The state would save money on the execution, the inmate’s family would receive money they otherwise would not receive, and the circus would win over large audiences who thought that circuses only have dancing dogs, trick ponies, and clowns stuffed into small cars. Am I nuts, or would the American public pay money to watch public executions?
